When I was 12 years old when I entered a local singing competition in Stratford, Ontario, placing in second. I taught myself how to play the piano, drums, guitar, and trumpet. In late 2007 I and My mother began posting videos on YouTube so that my family and friends that could not attend my performances would be able to view them, posting my cover versions of songs. I was soon approached by a Toronto-based company called Rapid Discovery Media, who assisted me in running my YouTube and MySpace accounts, producing, editing and promoting my videos. After posting me rendition of Chris Brown's "With You", Brown personally called me and congratulated my on his YouTube recognition.
Scooter Braun, a former marketing executive of So So Def, discovered my videos, and flew me to Atlanta, Georgia where I met with R&B singer/songwriter Usher. A week later I had the opportunity to sing for Usher who immediately became greatly interested, giving me an audition with Antonio L.A. Reid at Island Records who signed me to Island Records in October 2008.Justin Timberlake was reportedly in the running to sign me, but I eventually signed with Usher.
